My name is Leah Gachowski I have been a Girl Scout for the past 13 years with Troop 2050. During that time my troop and I have been involved in many community service projects as well as organizing Girl Scout events like the annual World Thinking Day.
The latest endeavor involved meeting the need for hand made knit and crochet baby hats and blankets. This project became possible by working alongside Albany Medical Center volunteer services, Grace Chapel in Clifton Park, which is my local church, as well as the Clifton Park Halfmoon Public Libraries knitting club. With community assistance over 70 baby hats and 7 baby blankets were received and are now ready to be donated to the Albany Medical Center as soon as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.
This is an important project as newborn babies have a large head compared to their body along with a low body fat ratio, so most heat is lost through the head of the baby. The gifting of a hand-made item also makes an important gesture of love and care to the families who receive these items.
This is an annual endeavor that will be sponsored by the Grace Chapel Church and the community at large with plans to expand to other institutions with similar needs. I am excited to see this project continue and grow over the coming years. Donations will be accepted at Grace Chapel, located at 996 Main St. Clifton Park, NY during regular office hours. Specifications for donations can be found at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1d3TZzabArgcESoS5UrioG6U3HdpzX0gSiBb9gRBftVs/edit?usp=sharing
I look forward to more community participation and excitedly anticipate new donations.
