TROY, NY − It was a low scoring affair Monday night as the ValleyCats picked up their first win of the year in extra innings in the 2019 home opener over the Staten Island Yankees 2-1.
Deury Carrasco scored the game winning run on a wild pitch thrown by the Yankees' Josh Maciejewski.
Prior to that, the ValleyCats had extended the game into extra innings thanks to a solo homerun from Yeuris Ramirez in the bottom of the ninth inning with a line drive to left field.
The Yankees had pressure on the ValleyCats thanks to a run scored in the top of the seventh off of a wild pitch. The run was allowed by reliever Jervic Chavez, who came in for relief of Guadalupe Chavez.
Guadalupe finished with five innings pitched and no runs allowed on just two hits and five strikeouts in the no decision.
Jervic finished with three innings of work and one earned run on no hits and two strikeouts.
The ValleyCarts winning pitcher was Hansel Paulino, who pitched two innings without allowing a run and just one hit.
Yankees losing pitcher was Maciejewski.
Making his pro baseball debut was Korey Lee, the Houston Astros' first round draft pick in the 2019 draft.
Lee went 0 for 4 at the plate, but fielded an off throw from third basemen Joe Perez at the plate to keep the go ahead run off the scoreboard in the top of the tenth.
The ValleyCats improve to 1-2 on the season and will face the Aberdeen Ironbirds Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in Aberdeen.
